In practice, the safest rule is simple: do your session on clean, bare skin. Makeup, heavy creams, and especially mineral sunscreens can physically sit on the skin and scatter or reflect light, which can reduce what reaches your skin. Many clinics and device makers tell people to remove makeup and cleanse before LED/PBM for exactly this reason.
There is no good evidence that normal red/NIR LED therapy by itself “drives toxins into your body.” The bigger, proven driver of increased skin absorption is heat. Higher temperature can increase percutaneous absorption in general.
Most PBM for skin is described as non-thermal or low-heat, and typical home routines should not meaningfully warm the skin if used correctly.
The one place where “light + topical” is a real medical thing is photodynamic therapy (PDT), where doctors apply a specific prescription photosensitizer and then use red light intentionally. That’s not skincare lotion, and it’s done under medical protocols.
Practical advice: If you worry about ingredients, do your light session first on clean skin, then apply your moisturizer or actives after.
You do not need a full shower. Just be clean where you treat. If you have sunscreen, makeup, sweat, or oily skincare on, wash that area with a gentle cleanser and pat dry. This is also standard pre-care advice in LED clinics.
Yes. More is not always better. Photobiomodulation often follows a biphasic dose response, meaning too little does nothing, the right dose helps, and too much can reduce benefits or irritate tissue.
Overuse or incorrect use can also cause irritation or even burns, especially if a device is too close, too long, or generates heat.
Practical advice: follow the session time and distance in your Helder 2 instructions and stay consistent rather than pushing long sessions.
